In a training class, two students are standing face to face with an instructor standing in a close distance. One student is called as A while other is B. A is given for a command by the instructor to make an attack while B is waiting until the attack close to the body and moved to avoid A’s attack.  Both attacking and avoiding technique is performed by following the principle technique of silat PD.

That is how Silat PD teach a face to face training. This unique technique was tailored by the founder to minimize injury between students.

After 5 – 10 commands,  instructor swap the command, so B is attacking while A is avoiding B’s attack. In the beginning level, one command, which is normally determined by instructor by saying ‘hoop’, is  given as to make one movement. When the students can correctly address their moves and show a correct technique, the instructor will then asked the student to make 2 moves in 1 command. This will then be varied up to 5 moves in 1 command.

This is one of face-to-face method in Silat PD. This method is called as Serang Hindar.

Another method of face to face in Silat PD is Serang Balas. Serang Balas means that in one command, A performs an attack and B avoids, after B avoid, B attacks A back and A will avoid. This set of movement: A attack B avoid, B attack and A avoid, is called as Serang Balas. On the first 10 commands, instructor will ask A to attack first.  On the second 10 command,  instructor will swap, so B will attack first.

The aim of Serang Balas method is to educate students, especially them who are avoiding,  to move to the area where it is difficult to see by the attacker, but will be easy for avoider to attack back. The avoider will also learn in how they must put their step during avoiding, so it will fasten their next movement when they are attacking back.

Different method applies in Beladiri. Beladiri is a set method where A is attacking, and B avoiding A’s attack, as well as performing another attack at the same time. So instead of avoiding like in Serang Hindar or avoid first and continue by attacking on the next movement like in Serang Balas, Beladiri will merge the avoiding move and attack back in one single movement.

As a simple illustration, if A attack with front punch, B will move to side and use the hand stabbing to the eye in one movement. In this case, B is performing beladiri.

This three methods of face-to-face will be trained from basic to advanced level. Not only with empty hand, student will also learn these methods using weapons such as knife, sword and long stick.
